Professore ordinario di Analisi Matematica alla Scuola Normale dal 1998. Normalista, attualmente Delegato alla Ricerca della Scuola Normale, si è laureato in Matematica all’Università di Pisa ed è stato professore di Analisi Matematica presso l’Università di Salerno e poi di Pavia.
E’ membro del comitato editoriale di “Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis”, di “Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations” e del “Journal of the European Mathematical Society”, ed è stato conferenziere invitato al II convegno Europeo di Budapest (1996) ed al Congresso Internazionale di Matematica di Pechino (2002), è socio corrispondente Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei e dell'Istituto Lombardo, Accademia di Scienze e Lettere.
I suoi principali interessi di ricerca riguardano il Calcolo delle Variazioni, la Teoria Geometrica della Misura, la Teoria del Trasporto Ottimale e le loro applicazioni alle equazioni alle derivate parziali (attività di ricerca e risultati principali - PDF)
