Professore associato di meccanica dei solidi nell’Università di Firenze dal 2005, si occupa principalmente di meccanica teorica, con particolare attenzione alla struttura generale (geometrico/analitica) della meccanica dei materiali complessi, che unifica modelli esistenti di classi particolari ed è uno strumento flessibile per la costruzione di nuovi schemi interpretativi del comportamento meccanico di materiali esotici, i quali possono perfino essere progettati per soddisfare necessità tecniche specifiche. I suoi interessi riguardano anche la meccanica dei corpi mutanti per enucleazione e propagazione di difetti strutturali ed inoltre la meccanica di classi particolari di materiali complessi quali i quasicristalli, i ferroelettrici, i corpi polimerici e classi di corpi elasto-plastici. La sua attività ha anche riguardato aspetti computazionali, dagli elementi finiti estesi agli integratori variazionali.

Coordina dal 2008 il gruppo di “Meccanica Teorica” del Centro di Ricerca Matematica E. De Giorgi.
Dal 2010 insegna anche nella Gonzaga University ed ha tenuto corsi in qualità di professore visitatore e seminari in varie istituzioni accademiche tra cui il Politecnico di Madrid, l’Università di Zurigo, la Northwestern University, il MIT, Yale, l’Ecole Polytechnique, l’Università di Versailles, l’IPPT di Varsavia ed il Weierstrass Institute di Berlino.

È stato “plenary speaker” allo STAMM-2010, alla CPEA-2010, e al GAMM-2010 e “key-note lecturer” al MIT nel 2005. “Advisory editor” di “Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences”, ha curato le edizioni di diversi volumi e numeri speciali di riviste.

È membro di varie società scientifiche tra cui (per elezione) l’ISIMM, la Society for Natural Philosophy, ed è membro del “board SC4” dello IASSAR.

Research interests

    • Mechanics and thermodynamics of continua: foundations of the mechanics of complex bodies connecting events from nano to macroscopic level, construction of models for special classes of complex bodies (quasicrystals, ferroelectrics, polymeric fluids…), dynamics of complex fluids, discontinuity waves, evolution of point, line and surface defects, fracture mechanics, damage mechanics, plasticity.
    • Computational methods: extended finite elements for the mechanics of complex bodies, variational integrators.
    • Statistical mechanics: substructural stochastic behaviour in random materials.
