The Normale has organized public readings of literary classics every year since 2001, under the direction of Roberto Fratini Serafide and with the scenography of Beatrice Meoni.
These readings are uncondensed public presentations of a work, read by alternating teams of volunteer, non-professional readers selected from among the students and professors of the Scuola Normale and the University of Pisa, as well as from among residents of Pisa and other cities. This guarantees a natural continuity between listening and reading public and transforms the readings into a collective experience.
Listening to the reading, reading in teams and sharing a common space where the text comes to life unites readers and listeners in each and every project.
Although the texts are always read in their entirety, the representations are innovative and experimental, so that a text is perceived both in its originality and as a contemporary experience. This is guaranteed by the use of sophisticated stage (amplification and diffusion of the voices of the readers) and artistic (sound, instrumental or noise comments, lights, multiple projections) techniques
The result is a theater which both protects and adds value to the amateur performance by presenting it using techniques of a professional level.
The places where the readings are carried out are chosen with care. Although not necessarily linked to theatrical activity, they are always highly evocative. They are necessarily little known or even unknown spaces, often long closed to the public, which are in this occasion reopened and offered as new. The Odyssey was read in the freshly restored medieval church of San Zeno, the Commedia in the civic Theater Rossi, Orlando in the long-abandoned public abattoir, and a Metamorphosis in the Arsenali Medicei.
