The Archives of the Scuola Normale Superiore have been active since 1985 and are currently directed by Prof. Pier Marco Bertinetto*. They are located in Palazzo dei Cavalieri in the beautifully decorated Sala Azzurra and three smaller connecting rooms, as well as in a part of Aula Pasquali.
The material of the Centre is composed of the Salviati Archives (the first acquired by the Scuola Normale, it still remains the most important as regards integrity, age and quantity of the manuscripts), the Historical Archives of the Scuola Normale itself, and the Archives of Delio Cantimori, Pietro Silva, Manfredi Porena, Ernesto Sestan, Roberto Vivarelli and the Archive of the Collegio Puteano.
The Centre manages the manuscripts and strives to make best use of them by organizing, publishing inventories and participating in conventions and exhibitions, etc. Some initiatives have been carried out directly by the Scuola Normale, others, instead, in cooperation with external research institutions. Projects have been organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pisa, the National Archives in Florence, La Colombaria Academy of Sciences and Arts of Florence, the Tuscan Archives Administration and the Italian Ministry of Culture.
The Centre also supervises the preservation of the materials, including restoring, which is financed by the Scuola Normale and by the Tuscan Archives Administration.
Alongside these technical services, the Archives Centre also offers services to the public. The Reading Room of the Centre is open every day for scholars from the Scuola Normale and outside, Italian and foreign. The users are generally highly specialized, for the most part university professors, researchers or graduate students. Nevertheless, many graduation theses for the universities of Pisa, Florence and Rome have been written over the years based on studies of manuscripts of the Centre, in particular through complex research carried out in the Salviati Archives. The same is true for doctoral dissertations; one example is the dissertation by Valeria Pinchera, entitled “Lusso e decoro. Vita quotidiana e spese dei Salviati di Firenze nel Sei e Settecento” (“Luxury and Decorum: Daily Life and Expenses of the Salviati Family of Florence in the 1600 and 1700s”). Written and defended at the Scuola Normale and supervised internally by Prof. Mario Rosa and externally by Prof. Richard A. Goldthwaite of the Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, it has since been published in the series Quaderni dell'Archivio Saviati .
The personnel of the Centre also provide support and scholarly assistance for the public, specialized or not. These services can be particularly demanding with foreign researchers, who may be in difficulty not only for archival and palaeographic reasons, but also due to the language of texts written in the 15 th to 17 th centuries.
(*) The Director of the Centre was long assisted by a Committe for the Scuola Normale Archives, composed of Prof. Pier Marco Betinetto, President, and Professors Paola Barocchi, Armando Petrucci and Alfredo Stussi, the researchers Mauro Moretti and Roberto Pertici, the Director of the Scuola Normale Library, Sandra Di Majo and the Head of the Archive Centre, Milletta Sbrilli.
Since 2002 a Board of Directors has been formed as well, composed by the Director, Prof. Pier Marco Betinetto, and by Roberto Vivarelli, Armando Petrucci, Michele Olivari and Maria Pia Paoli.
