Born in Ferrara in 1947, Pier Marco Bertinetto completed his studies in Torino. He taught History of the Italian Language at the University of Torino (1975-1979) and subsequently General Linguistics, first at the University of Roma (1980) and then at Scuola Normale Superiore (since 1981), where he has directed the Laboratorio di Linguistica “G. Nencioni”. He retired at the end of the 2017 academic year.

Member of Academia Europaea, Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia (Finnish Accademy of Sciences).
President of Societas Linguistica Europaea in 2009.
He has directed more than 30 PhD dissertations (some more under way) and has been external reviewer, or defense committee member, in several others in Italy and abroad.
He has acted as consultant expert for position selections, or as institutional evaluation member, for various universities or national agencies in several countries.
He has organized more than 20 international conferences.
Main research areas: experimental phonetics and phonology, experimental morphology, tense-aspect semantics, typological linguistics.
