Programma

The course intends to retrace and analyze the poetic work of Mario Luzi (Sesto Fiorentino 1914-Florence 2005), one of the highest voices of the European poetic twentieth century with the aim of restoring an overall picture of his artistic and intellectual career, and placing this journey in relationship with the twentieth-century poetic tradition.
From his literary debut in 1935 with the short collection La barca, born in the Florentine hermetic context, a first part of the course will be dedicated to the first phase of the author's poetic production: the collection Avvento notturno (1940), Un brindisi (1944), Quaderno gotico (1947) with particular attention to the role that the night and the shadow represent in the link between poetry and history.
In a second moment, the lessons will deal with the intermediate phase of Luzi's work, the Fifties and Sixties with the collections Primizie del deserto (1952), Onore del vero (1957), Il giusto della vita (1960), Nel magma ( 1963, 1966), Dal fondo delle campagne (1965), a phase until now considered by critics to be the most successful in the evolution and refinement of the dialogic technique within poetic writing, and in the construction of a new form of reflection on the relationship between city and countryside in the years of the Italian economic and industrial boom.
A third section of the course will retrace the production in verse of the 1970s and 1980s - from Su fondamenti invisibili (1971) to Per il battesimo dei nostri frammenti (1985), passing through a fundamental collection such as Al fuoco della controversia (1978), object in detail of a third module of the 2024 courses in Contemporary Italian Literature held at the Scuola Normale Superiore - to show how the Tuscan poet, in the most mature period of his creation, combined civil and political arguments with the utmost technical and stylistic knowledge in the use of the forms and measures of the verse, opening at least in part the reading and knowledge of his work to an audience not only of insiders.
