Prerequisiti

The course is primarily intended for students of the Corso ordinario but is also open to PhD students. Visiting students are warmly welcome.

A knowledge of Greek is required; however, no prior knowledge of Greek epigraphy is necessary, as the relevant notions and methodologies will be provided in class.

Programma

In the ancient Greek world, the term stasis refers, in a political context, to a situation of crisis and conflict within a civic community. The course aims to explore the conditions that lead to civil war, the ways in which conflict manifests, and its effects (political, but also social and economic) on the civic community. In the first module (20 hours), we will analyze the evolution of the concept of civil war up to the 4th century BC, through the perspectives offered by poets and historians. In particular, we will discuss Thucydides' analysis of the civil war that broke out in Corcyra between 427 and 425 BC, its role in his work, and its exemplary nature. The second module (20 hours) will focus on the methods developed by the Greek city-state, especially Athens after the experience of the Thirty Tyrants, to restore civic harmony, and the role of public and private memory (is it better to remember or forget?) in this process.

Obiettivi formativi

The objective of the course is to deepen the knowledge of Greek history during the Archaic and Classical periods; to gain an understanding of the institutional functioning of the polis (with a particular, though not exclusive, focus on Athens); and to acquire the research methodologies necessary for addressing a historical issue.
