Prerequisiti

The course is designed for students of the PhD programme, but it is also open to undergraduate students. A knowledge of Greek is required; no prior knowledge of Greek epigraphy is necessary, as the relevant notions and methodologies will be provided in class.

Programma

The course is designed as a continuation of the one intended for undergraduate students. It consists of two modules, the first of which is shared with the course for undergraduate students and focuses on the methods developed by the Greek city-state, particularly Athens after the experience of the Thirty Tyrants, to restore civic harmony and the role of public and private memory (is it better to remember or forget?) in this process. The second module will analyze several documents from the late Classical and Hellenistic periods, issued by the poleis to restore civic harmony after a civil war and prevent the rise of future tyrannies.

Obiettivi formativi

The objective is to deepen one's knowledge of Greek history of the Hellenistic period, to acquire knowledge of the institutional functioning of the polis (with particular but not exclusive reference to Athens), and to acquire the methodologies of investigation necessary for the analysis of a historical problem.
