Translating the classics
Prerequisiti
The only prerequisite is an elementary knowledge of Classical Latin. Recommended for all students.
Programma
1.Translating the classics. The practice of translation, especially from Latin but also from French, plays an important role in the early formation of Italian literary prose. After a methodological introduction, some relevant cases of translation from Latin classics, both in poetry (Virgil) and prose (Cicero), will be examined from a philological, linguistic and literary point of view. The tradition of studies, particularly significant in this area, will also provide a good basis for comparison for the following modules.
2.Translating the Bible. Translations of Sacred Scripture in the Italian Middle Ages have only recently received specific attention, so much so that for most of the biblical books there is still no critical edition. This module will therefore present a number of cases of preparatory work and editions in progress, showing from within the philological work the particular problems posed by the sacred text, and investigating the relationship of this strand of translations to that devoted to the classics.
Supplementary teaching. The hours of supplementary teaching will be devoted to illustrating some fundamentals of method and some working tools, so that all students will be able to follow the course with profit.
Obiettivi formativi
Learning philology, developing interpretation competences, dealing with digital humanities.
Riferimenti bibliografici
For the philological method, reference point will be Gianfranco Contini, Filologia, il Mulino 2014, with Lino Leonardi, Filologia romanza. 1. Critica del testo, Le Monnier 2022. On the subject of the course, still fundamental is Gianfranco Folena, Volgarizzare e tradurre, a cura di Gianfelice Peron, Cesati 2021. In addition to the editions that will be signalled gradually, for an overview of the current state of studies it is useful to have in mind the collective volume Tradurre dal latino nel Medioevo italiano. Translatio studii e procedure linguistiche, a cura di Lino Leonardi e Speranza Cerullo, Edizioni del Galluzzo 2017. Further specific bibliography will be provided and discussed during the course.
