Extra-curricular internships, or "training and orientation internships" consist of a period of on-the-job orientation and training that does not constitute a working relationship, and which allows for the acquisition of technical-professional, instrumental, organizational and behavioural training.
The promoting institution for internships is the Scuola Normale Superiore, while the host organizations can be companies, public or private institutions, international organizations, diplomatic representations, cultural institutions and other organizations, in Italy or abroad.
The academic tutor, usually the Director or a delegate, is responsible for organizing the internship.
The company tutor, chosen by the host institution, supports the intern in the workplace.
Former undergraduate students can apply, within 12 months of obtaining their degree. If the regional law allows it, the right to apply is also extended to PhD graduates within 12 months of obtaining their PhD.
The application must be submitted at least two months before the internship is due to start.
The duration of the curricular internship can vary from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months, and must be continuous.
If the internship takes place at a host institution / company that already has an agreement with the Scuola, the educational project can be submitted
Should the internship be activated at an institution/ company which does not yet have an agreement with the Scuola, the agreement must be stipulated first.
It is the duty of the intern to fill in the attendance register, which will be signed by the company tutor.
Within 30 days from the end of the internship the final report must be submitted to the placement office, signed by the intern, by the academic tutor and by the company tutor.
Should the position of the intern allow it, it is possible to apply for grants, with the "Internship request" form. The request will be submitted to the committee of reference of the relevant faculty following the procedure foreseen by “study and research activities off-site”.
Funds towards internship grants are made available periodically through the publication of calls.
For extra-curricular internships at institutions and companies in Italy and in some foreign countries, the host company is expected to contribute to the costs incurred by the intern according to the regional law of reference.
