How to access the Scuola di Orientamento Universitario
The Scuola di Orientamento Universitario (the University Orientation School) is a joint initiative of the SNS, the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and the Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori IUSS of Pavia, the three Italian public universities with a special status dedicated to the education of particularly gifted and deserving students. They admit students exclusively by competition; students attend high-level study courses that enhance the degree courses of the universities of Pisa and Pavia; their educational policies develop individual talent and favour early involvement in research. On 25th February 2018 the three Scuole united to form a federation, with the aim of developing synergies in the contexts of higher education and advanced research. This intention also gave rise to the Scuola di Orientamento Universitario (the University Orientation School).
The Scuola di Orientamento Universitario (the University Orientation School)
The 2021 edition of the Scuola di Orientamento Universitario (the University Orientation School) consists of three online courses, each lasting three days. Students can get to know the perspectives, the themes and the didactic and research approach of a university policy of excellence designed to develop individual potential, a critical spirit and methodological rigour.
Who can apply?
Students of the penultimate year of the upper secondary school for the school year 2020 – 2021 may apply who are in possession of a personal and scholastic profile of high merit and an average school grade no lower than 8/10.
There are 306 places available, equally subdivided among the three courses to take place on the above mentioned dates.
Participation procedure
All upper secondary schools should undertake to promote the initiative to the utmost, in order to allow students of high merit to present their candidatures directly and autonomously to the Scuola di Orientamento Universitario (the University Orientation School).
Candidates can send their own application to scuolaorientamento.it by 20th May 2021.
Only candidatures accompanied by a certification of school results, extracted from the electronic register or provided in PDF format by the school of appurtenance, will be considered as valid.
Selection Process
The selection process is carried out by a Commission consisting of representatives from the three Scuole. On the basis of the candidatures received, the Commission will identify the candidates to be admitted to the courses by evaluating each student's school results and personal profile.
The evaluation of the candidates' school results will take into consideration the final average of the marks obtained in the third year and in the first trimester/quarter of the ongoing school year. The average is calculated by including all the subjects (including conduct and motor sciences and sports) but excluding the marks for religion, since this is an optional subject.
To ensure a balanced representation of the national school population, the participants will also be selected on the basis of a division into 5 regional macro-areas (North West, North East, Centre, South and Islands) in consideration of the number of nominations received and/or the number of schools involved.
Outcome of the selection process
The list of the students selected and their respective assignation to the courses will be published on the web sites of the three Scuole (Sant'Anna, SNS and IUSS) by 4th June.
Those students admitted will receive, at the e-mail address given on registration of their candidature, a letter of invitation containing all the information for participation in the online activities
The programmes of the three courses, planned jointly by the three Scuole, will include lectures, round tables, seminars and workshops in such a way as to offer participants the same opportunities regardless of the course to which they are assigned. The students selected will be assigned to their courses during the selection stage, taking into account the availability as indicated by the students in their application form, ensuring a balanced representation of the group in terms of geographical provenance, school attended and university study interests.
