The Library of the Scuola Normale Superiore is entrusted with the task of the conservation, protection, enhancement and development of the bibliographical heritage of the Scuola.

To this end, the management of the collections is based on various criteria: in response to the lines of research and teaching of the Scuola, the Library oversees the updating and specialisation of the collections; testimony to the cultural panorama and to the network of relationships to which the Scuola has over time made fundamental contributions is given by  private library collections donated by scholars that have had relationships of education, teaching and research with the Scuola.

The Library guarantees the availability and accessibility of its collections and ensures the dissemination of information through research tools that come up to national and international standards and that meet the demands of the scientific community of reference; it pursues Open Access policies, collaborating actively with the institutional Archive of the Scuola.

In order to guarantee its presence in the networks of scientific communication, the Library promotes co-operation with other national and international libraries and with a view to sharing resources and optimising the services available.
