The SNS Theatre Group and fActors

This leads to that: from the Theatre Group to FAcT

In 2013, the SNS students founded the first Theatre Group in the history of the Normale: the Group soon became a reference point for research and experimentation in the field of ancient theatre, undertaking new translations of classical plays and introducing innovative staging and dissemination initiatives open to young students and to all the citizens of Pisa. Today the Theatre Group has several publications to its credit, both informative and specialized, and is studied in different academic contexts (the reception of ancient theatre, public history ...). In addition, every year, the Group organizes workshops dedicated specifically to high school students.

The Theatre Group of the Normale is not the only academic theatre company present in Italy: in fact, theatre is still one of the fundamental pillars of expression and research in all the major European universities. Despite the centrality of theatre in the university context, however, an opportunity to put together the most innovative academic theatrical agenda was still waiting to be seized. For this reason, in 2018 the students of the Normale founded fActors Ente di terzo settore, a non profit cultural association with the aim of establishing a theatre festival specifically dedicated to academic theatre. The decisive support of the Scuola Normale, the Municipality of Pisa and the Fondazione Pisa led to the founding of FAcT - Festival of Academic theatre: for the first edition of the Festival, held in June 2018, five major university theatre companies from Italy and elsewhere were brought to Pisa; the Normale catered for their stay in Pisa for the entire duration of the Festival. Each company performed its own play and organised related events open to all those interested. The reaction of the city was extremely positive, with over one thousand five hundred spectators and several "sold out" events. The first edition of FAcT was awarded the Medaglia del Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella (the Medal of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella).

FAcT's mission

FAcT has two fundamental aims:

  • To offer all the young theatre companies involved an opportunity for exchange and friendship, to break down local and national barriers, and to offer Pisa a programme of high quality theatre events. Since academic theatre has always had a very strong bond with professional theatre, to offer a series of plays produced by young students also means offering a preview of the direction in which theatre will go in the next ten to twenty years.
  • To establish an international network of the main academic theatre companies. To this day, in fact, there is still no scientific, artistic and organizational co-ordination among the most important universities involved in the theatre: this means less circulation of ideas, less sharing and less overall impact on the Italian and European theatre system. The idea of FAcT is to create a network of companies, both virtual and real: on the one hand, a real database that puts together the most interesting data, the photographs and the videos of the companies participating in the Festival; on the other hand, a physical circulation of people and ideas, in the heart of Tuscany, in Pisa, the city of the Normale.
