Programma

This interdisciplinary course explores the complex intersections between digitalization and migration. It critically examines how digital technologies are reshaping the migration experience, from decision-making and mobility to governance and labour. The course begins with key theoretical frameworks linking digitalization to global migration processes. It then delves into the emergence of "migration industries" driven by digital platforms and IT technologies. It also explores the role of online media in forming and sustaining transnational migration networks, including the influence of social media on identity, information exchange, and community building. Then, it interrogates how states and international bodies utilize digital tools in migration governance, including surveillance, data collection, and border management. Finally, it focusses on digital research methods tailored to studying migrant populations.

Obiettivi formativi

Students will be able to assess how digitization, data, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) influence the lives of migrants and contemporary migration dynamics. Through empirical case studies and theoretical analysis, the course aims to foster critical insights into the socio-political consequences of an increasingly digitized migration landscape. The course also equips students with digital research methods specifically designed for studying migrant populations.
