This interdisciplinary course explores the complex intersections between digitalization and migration. It critically examines how digital technologies are reshaping the migration experience, from decision-making and mobility to governance and labour. The course begins with key theoretical frameworks linking digitalization to global migration processes. It then delves into the emergence of "migration industries" driven by digital platforms and IT technologies. It also explores the role of online media in forming and sustaining transnational migration networks, including the influence of social media on identity, information exchange, and community building. Then, it interrogates how states and international bodies utilize digital tools in migration governance, including surveillance, data collection, and border management. Finally, it focusses on digital research methods tailored to studying migrant populations.
