Seminar presentation

Note modalità di esame

The topic of the seminar will be agreed upon with the lecturer, who will propose a number of topics related to the subject matter covered during the course. The skills and interests of students will be taken into account, and students may also propose topics as long as they are compatible with the course. The seminar may also be prepared in small groups in order to promote the seminarial dimension of the course and the exchange of ideas.

The approximate duration of the oral presentation is 45 minutes, followed by discussion. The material to be discussed (handouts, slides, texts, bibliography, any written drafts) must be sent to the lecturer (by email) at least one week before the seminar; the documents will be made available to the whole class on the dedicated Teams page at least 1-2 days before the seminar.

Prerequisiti

The only essential prerequisite is a passion for poetry. Knowledge of Latin and one or more Romance languages facilitates participation.

Programma

Course topic

The course will offer an initial approach to the poetry of the troubadours in langue d’oc through the filter of their reception in Dante’s work, in order to investigate a fundamental turning point for European poetic culture. We will first read authors and texts cited in De vulgari eloquentia and then move on to those that are recognisable in the background of the lyrical production. Reading the texts in their original language will also provide an opportunity to address the interpretative problems they pose, including through the analysis of the manuscript tradition.

Supplementary teaching

The course includes a supplementary teaching module aimed at facilitating attendance by offering elements of philology, linguistics and metrics, as well as indications on the main research tools and methods in the field.

Obiettivi formativi

The aim of the course is to introduce students to reading medieval texts as the foundation of European culture. The acquisition of the principles of philological method and the development of interpretative skills will be pursued through close study of the texts and manuscripts that have preserved them.

Riferimenti bibliografici

For the philological method, reference point will be Gianfranco Contini, Filologia, il Mulino 2014, with Lino Leonardi, Filologia romanza. 1. Critica del testo, Le Monnier 2022. The poems are edited by Luciano Formisano e Francesco Montuori in Dante Alighieri, De vulgari eloquentia, ed. by Enrico Fenzi, Roma, Salerno Editrice, 2012; still useful Gianfranco Folena, Vulgares eloquentes. Vite e poesie dei trovatori di Dante, Padova, Liviana, 1961. For an introduction to troubadour poetry: Costanzo Di Girolamo, I trovatori, Torino, Bollati Boringhieri, 20212.

Further specific bibliography will be provided and discussed during the course.
