Mario Pianta is Professor of Economic Policy at Scuola Normale Superiore, Faculty of political and social sciences in Florence, with the ‘Carlo Azeglio Ciampi’ Chair on ‘The political economy and historical dynamics of modern capitalism’, on leave from the Università di Urbino Carlo Bo.
He is President of the Istituto di Studi Avanzati Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and a member of the Scientific Board of the Edizioni della Normale. He teaches courses on ‘International Political Economy’.
He is president of the Società Italiana di Economia, the professional association of Italian economists (900 members, https://www.siecon.org/it), and has been a member of the Centro Linceo Interdisciplinare of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Italy’s Academy of Sciences.
Mario Pianta is co-Chief Editor della rivista Structural Change and Economic Dynamics (Elsevier).

Research interests
His research themes include the causes and consequences of inequality; the relationships between innovation, structural change, economic growth and employment; economic, industrial and research policies in Europe and Italy; international political economy approaches to globalisation and social activism. On these issues he has published more than 70 articles in international scientific journals and has supervised twenty PhD students from several universities.

Previous positions
Mario Pianta has been a Professor at Università Roma Tre and Università di Urbino Carlo Bo, and a researcher at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Rome. He has been Fernand Braudel fellow at the European University Institute, visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, research fellow at Columbia University, visiting scholar at the University of Cambdridge. He has obtained his PhD from the London School of Economics.
He has carried out research in cooperation with the European Commission, OECD, ILO, UNRISD, UNIDO, MIUR, the Bank of Italy, the Tuscany Region. He has an international experience of research evaluation, including EU programmes. He has been a member of the evaluation committee for the National Scientific Habilitation (ASN) of university professors and of several selection committees for positions in different universities.
