Mario Pianta is a full Professor of Political Economy at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the Scuola Normale Superiore, in Florence.
He is the president of the Istituto di Studi Avanzati Carlo Azeglio Ciampi of the Scuola Normale and a member of the Scientific Board of the Edizioni della Normale.

He is the president of the Società Italiana di Economia (1000 members) and co-Chief Editor of the journal Structural Change and Economic Dynamics (Elsevier).

Research interests
His research themes include the following: the causes and consequences of inequality; the relationships between innovation, structural change, economic growth and employment; the economic, industrial and research policies in Europe and Italy; the analysis of International Political Economy regarding globalisation and the social movements; the problems of war and of peace. He has published more than 70 articles on these issues in international scientific journals and has supervised twenty PhD theses of students from several universities.

Previous positions
Mario Pianta was formerly a Professor at Università Roma Tre and Università di Urbino Carlo Bo, and a researcher at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Rome. He was a member of the Centro Linceo Interdisciplinare 'Beniamino Segre' of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei from 2011 to 2014.

He has also been a Fernand Braudel fellow at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute, in Fiesole (Florence), a visiting professor at the Centre for International Studies at the London School of Economics and a visiting professor at the CRPS, Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He has been a research fellow at Columbia University of New York and a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge. He obtained his PhD from the London School of Economics.
He has carried out research in collaboration with the European Commission, OECD, ILO, UNRISD, UNIDO, MIUR, the Banca d'Italia and the Tuscany Region. He has international experience in research assessment, including EU framework programmes. He was a member of the 2012-2013 MIUR qualification assessment committee (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) (ASN) and has been on several selection committees for university positions.
