The presentation will focus on a topic related to the course, to be agreed with the instructor at least one month before the date scheduled for the oral presentation, and preferably sooner. The most important ancient texts (with translation), the relevant bibliography, and other quotes which may prove helpful during the presentation should be included in a handout (max. length 10 pages) to be sent in draft to the instructor at least a week before the presentation and in its final form no later than one day day beforehand.

Programma

The module aims to (a) provide a diachronic analysis of some of the most important critical issues in the interpretation of the Aeneid; particular attention will be devoted to its reception in the contemporary; (b) offer the critical tools necessary for analyzing the poem, including the tradition of ancient and modern commentaries; (c) focus on a detailed reading of book 1, esp. on its narrative structures, intertextual models, themes and expressive forms.


Obiettivi formativi

Upon successful completion of the module, students should have acquired a detailed knowledge of (a) the Aeneid and some of the most important interpretive issues; (b) the instruments for carrying out an in-depth analysis of the poem, including how they have aevolved over time; (c) the contemporary critical perspectives on the Aeneid, which can also provide a stimulus towards a personal critical approach to the poems.
