Programma

The course develops the theoretical framework of galactic dynamics, considering both collisionless components and the gaseous component, with emphasis on the interplay between gravity, pressure, turbulence, and dissipative processes. The main focus is on the physical processes that shape galaxy evolution, such as gravitational instabilities, angular momentum transport, and mass assembly. Particular attention is given to the high-redshift regime, where galaxies are gas-rich and rapidly evolving, and where classical equilibrium descriptions often break down. In this context, turbulence, gas accretion, mergers, and feedback are treated as key drivers of the dynamics. Throughout the course, analytical ideas are connected to numerical simulations, from idealized disks to cosmological zoom-in models, and to observational diagnostics, with the aim of building a coherent framework to interpret the dynamical state of galaxies across cosmic time.

Practical components include the analysis of simulation outputs and the derivation of dynamical quantities for comparison with observations.

The course provides an advanced introduction to the dynamical processes governing the formation and evolution of galaxies, with particular emphasis on the high-redshift Universe, where galaxies are rapidly assembling and often far from equilibrium.
