The impact of the Department of Excellence
The project has developed in depth the two pre-established objectives, attaining the expected results on termination of the project and laying the foundations for the consolidation of the medium- to long-range impact of the project.
The text below describes in greater detail some of the more important results.
The creation of a new PhD in Art History and the reorganisation on a disciplinary basis (and no longer, as previously, chronologically) of two PhDs (History; Italian Studies and Modern Philology) among the faculty's already existing four, has led to an improved rationalisation in the selection process for PhD students, a sizeable increase in the number of PhD scholarships (+12 four-year scholarships, 7 of which are entirely funded by the DipE) and greater interdisciplinary dialogue regarding the text-image relationship, the latter also enhanced by the greater interaction between the Strategie Multidisciplinari Applicate alla Ricerca e alla Tecnologia (Multidisciplinary Strategies Applied to Research and Technology) (SMART) laboratory and the Humanities fields of research characterising the DipE project. The connection and two-directional interaction between the activities of the DipE and those of the DocStAr and SAET Laboratories of the SNS has not only been a decisive factor for the attainment of the pre-established scientific and teaching objectives, but has also led to an in-depth consolidation of the line of research, present at the SNS, aiming above all at the digitalisation of the cultural heritage, images and texts and their sharing with the international scientific community. This approach has furthermore given rise to the creation of new research prospects in the thematic line of the DipE of the Faculty of Humanities.
Lastly, the DipE envisages economic incentives for the technical and administrative personnel involved in the creation of the project, with particular reference to personnel of the organisational units dedicated to the teaching, research and communication activities and to the support personnel for the SNS laboratories and research centres involved (DocStAR, SAET and SMART).
