Syllabus
The history of Western philosophy is often portrayed as the history of radical, persistent, but also rational (or blameless) disagreements. This module of the course aims to introduce the theme of rational disagreement in philosophy and to discuss, in particular, the notion of "epistemic peer", which has recently gained traction in the internal debate of epistemology of disagreement. This notion raises significant questions in the context of philosophical activity itself: how should we behave when we find ourselves in disagreement with an epistemic peer? Should we attribute the same importance to their opinions as we do to our own? How can we determine who is actually an epistemic peer?
