The Outcomes of Episodic Protest Coalitions: Lessons from the Disability Rights Movement
Abstract
Episodic coalitions are alliances formed between different social movement organizations and activists within and between social movements often motivated by new broad opportunities or threats. Coalition groups are likely more able to mobilize a wider set of resources in seeking to affect change. These coalitions are often dynamic and flexible, adapting to changing circumstances and dissolving once their specific goal is achieved. But how are goals defined and do coalitions meet their objectives? What are the implications of episodic coalitions on social movement structures, tactics, strategies, and subsequent mobilization? Drawing from the disability rights movement over the last 60-year period, I show how coalitions find some success in their efforts, but often face challenges. Activists have been able to achieve partial solutions and short-term victories, but long-term outcomes are often uncertain.
