Language and technique in early Montale: from Ossi to Occasioni

As early as the texts added to the second edition of the Ossi di seppia (1928), Montale's poetic language, while maintaining substantial coherence with the previously elaborated system, shows that it is moving toward greater essentiality and concentration of formal means. The process will come to fruition in Occasions (1939), partly as a result of significant changes in thematic horizons, with the abandonment of Ligurian landscape settings and the new centrality assumed by the love experience, which entail a different approach at every level of construction: lexical choices, syntax, metrics, discursive procedures. The teaching module dedicated specifically to PhD students intends to address this moment of transition and redefinition of a poetic language that seems to be attuned to the most advanced experiences of coeval European poetry.

Obiettivi formativi

On the one hand, the course aims to introduce students to the linguistic and stylistic analysis of poetic texts through a great classic of the tradition; on the other hand, it intends to show how formal traits provide a key to the overall interpretation of texts.
