Prerequisiti

The course is designed for PhD students, but is open to anyone interested in.

Programma

Vices and virtues - The course will focus on the gradual emergence of the septenary in iconographic representations of the deadly sins. Until the 14th century, the septenary of sins plays a secondary role in monumental art and literature. In the first decades of the 14th century, however, something changes in relation to the new social and political context.

The Hell - The new depictions of Hell also turn the horrific show into a moral lesson on sin. In particular, the course will focus on the depictions of Giotto in Padua, Buffalmacco in Pisa and Giovanni da Modena in Bologna.

Obiettivi formativi

The aims of the course are to introduce students to historiographic reflection and refine a critical approach to sources.

Riferimenti bibliografici

Bibliographic references will be given during the course.
