Overview of the session

For this third rendez-vous of the workshop series in transnational governance we engage in a discussion on transnational security governance and security operations in the ‘post-interventionist’ era. Security assistance and operations represent nowadays the main form of engagement by external actors in post-conflict /post-authoritarian contexts or areas of limited statehood. While the idea that security assistance would respond merely to strategic objectives is now considered not exhaustive, intervention landscapes undeniably remain complex sites of cooperation, adaptation or contestation, where international and local actors interact to produce new security governance architectures and contribute to shaping the political trajectories of societies involved. The changed character of security governance and intervention goes hand in hand with the changing character of war, whereby interventions are increasingly abandoning their normative agenda in favour of a more technical and standardised approach carried out through airpower, through ‘light footprint’ operations and wide coalitions. Comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives are more and more needed to gain a comprehensive and critical understanding of the theory and practice of security governance.
