The SNS Community
Studying and conducting research at the Scuola Normale means becoming part of a community where learning extends beyond lecture rooms and laboratories. College life, the daily sharing of spaces and informal social gatherings foster interaction among undergraduate and PhD students, lecturers, researchers and technical-administrative staff. Exchange across different disciplines, experiences and perspectives encourages knowledge sharing and the circulation of ideas. In the colleges, canteen, library and the many spaces designed for study and relaxation, enriching relationships are built that help create an environment open to dialogue, collaboration and participation.
The Scuola Normale's undergraduate Courses - which correspond to bachelor's and master's degree programmes - are organised into three broad academic areas: Humanities, Sciences, and Political and Social Sciences, the latter offered only at the master's degree level. Admission is through a selection process based exclusively on merit. Students admitted to the programme attend both the courses offered by the Scuola Normale and the corresponding university degree courses. This study pathway requires passion, dedication, and commitment, and is supported by a system of services and opportunities designed to enable students to focus fully on their studies. Internal courses, board and accommodation are provided free of charge; students also receive an annual grant, the amount of which depends on their ISEE. Students have access to the Scuola’s research facilities, equipment, laboratories and library, and may request financial support for study periods in Italy and outside Italy.
PhD students also take a full part in the life of the community. Daily interaction with people from different countries and academic backgrounds makes the Scuola Normale a highly specialised environment in which research develops through discussion and collaboration. PhD students can work with the Scuola’s research groups, centres and laboratories, while building academic connections with research institutions in Italy and around the world. Admission to the PhD programmes, open to graduates from all over the world, is based on qualifications and examinations. Successful applicants receive a scholarship and may also obtain additional funding for research activities in Italy and outside Italy.
