“Arenas in Revolutions and in Protest”
ABSTRACT
Theories of revolutions and theories of protest have followed parallel trajectories for decades but have recently converged even more. As McAdam, Tarrow, and Tilly suggested in 2001, the same conceptual tools can be applied to many types of political engagement. I would like to use the concept of arenas to trace this convergence, but also to try to disentangle several definitions: of revolutions, social revolutions, social change, capitalism, and discourse. The broad shift from structural imagery to the point of view of the players themselves is part of a sociology of respect that has moral advantages as well as analytic ones.
