Research grants funded by the Institute
For 2020 and 2021, given the impossibility to invite international guests on account of the mobility restrictions caused by the pandemic, the Ciampi Institute funded six research grants, three of which are on topics relating to the problems posed by the pandemic.
1. After the coronavirus pandemic. The effects of health crises on society and knowledge
The research involves, with particular attention to the topics of knowledge, education, universities and research: - a review of the sociological and politological literature on the socio-economic and political effects of pandemics; - an analysis of the existing statistics on health data and on the socio-economic and political effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy; - an analysis of the public debate on the policies of response to the pandemic in public opinion, in the political world and in civic society; - an analysis of the measures adopted during the pandemic.

2. After the pandemic. Patents on medicines and vaccines and health data checking: research, business strategies, national policies, international regulations
The research involves: - an analysis of health activities as a public good and as a private production, with emphasis on research, intellectual property and patents on medicines, research and the production of vaccines, the development and use of health databases, public demand for such goods, also in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic; - an analysis of the main public and private research activities in these fields and of the strategies of the major multinational businesses; - an analysis of how these activities can be developed in a public health system and of the social initiatives and mobilisations linked to it; - an assessment of the policies concerning these topics of Italy, Europe, the major countries and international organisations such as the WHO.

3. Pandemics and states of emergency. A historical perspective in the light of the Spanish 'Flu pandemic of 1918-1920
The research involves: - a review of the historiographical literature on the socio-economic and political effects of pandemics; - an analysis of the existing sources of health data and of the socio-economic and political effects of the Spanish 'Flu pandemic in Italy; - an analysis of the public debate on the policies of response to the pandemic in public opinion, in the political world and in civic society; - an analysis of the measures adopted during the pandemic.

4. The scientific system in emerging countries: research, mobility flows of researchers, international scientific cooperation
The research involves: - an analysis of the scientific system in emerging countries, possibly involving a more in-depth examination of the cases of China and India, with an examination of funding, personnel, university students, scientific publications, and the more dynamic sectors of the mathematical, physical, chemical and engineering sciences; - international mobility of researchers in the sciences, knowledge transfer, international collaborations, the brain drain threat; - international scientific co-operation activities, the role of UNESCO, international institutes such as the ICTP of Trieste and of other international organisations, and the impact on scientific development of the emerging countries.

5. The political anatomy of Baroque representation: a historical perspective of the process of social construction
The research involves: - an analysis of models of conception and representation of society as a whole, and in particular of its abstract political form, statehood in the Baroque era; - an analysis of the iconic and emblematic representation of society with particular emphasis on the relationship between texts and images in the first part of the modern age; - an analysis of the symbolic representations of the citizenry in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.

6. Digital technologies, work, social conflicts
The research involves: a) an analysis of the literature in the social sciences on technological transformation linked to digitalisation, their determinants and their social and political effects, and the related public policies; b) the development of quantitative and qualitative empirical analyses on the said transformations in Italy and in Europe, their social and political effects and the impact of the policies in these contexts.
