Effective field theories I
Prerequisiti
The course is designed for fourth-year master’s students.
Prerequisite: An introductory course in Quantum Field Theory.
Programma
The building blocks of the Standard Model
Representations of the Lorentz group: Particles vs Fields
Long-range forces: gauge invariance from Lorentz invariance
Effective Field Theories and Renormalisation
The electroweak chiral Lagrangian and the Higgs boson
Obiettivi formativi
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the modern methodology of quantum Effective Field Theories (EFTs). Upon completion, students will have the knowledge and skills necessary to construct and apply EFTs. Additionally, they will understand the ubiquitous role of EFTs in contemporary theoretical physics through the study of various examples, including the Standard Model of particle physics, gravity, and early universe cosmology.
