Fabio Beltram (2010-2016)
A matter physicist, Beltram was called to the Scuola Normale in 1992 from the United States, where he had carried out all his previous scientific activity.
Deputy Director in 2005, in 2010 he was elected Director and started a process of renewal of the Scuola Normale with regard to teaching staff and teaching policy, encouraging a generational turnover, reshaping the teaching syllabus and strengthening the international connections.
Under the directorship of Fabio Beltram, in 2013 the Scuola Normale incorporated the Italian Institute of Human Sciences in Florence (initially a Department, which joined the two faculties), and also included social and political disciplines in the PhD syllabus, adding to the historical Pisan location the Florentine one at Palazzo Strozzi.
In the presence of the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, on 18 October 2015 this structure of the Scuola Normale Superiore was formalised, without geographical specification, with an increasingly international vocation.
The building expansion of the Scuola Normale also continued, with the inauguration of the Capitini college in Florence, intended for students of the Florentine site, and the acquisition of the Palazzo della Canonica.
Fabio Beltram continued and relaunched the process of opening up to the public inaugurated by Bernardini: the rooms of the Palazzo della Carovana were now open to the public, exhibiting works on periodic loan from the Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art in Prato. The Library expanded into the Palazzo della Canonica, in Piazza dei Cavalieri.
