Prerequisites

This course is intended for PhD students and is open to undergraduate students. Knowledge of Latin and ancient Greek is required.

Syllabus

The course is devoted to the relationship between the end of the ancient city and the end of public games. Documents from late antiquity, mainly between the 4th and 6th centuries AD, will be examined. Part of the lectures will be devoted to the perception of circus and gladiatorial spectacles in contemporary culture.
