Programma

Taking as its starting point the concept of ‘lieu de mémoire’ (P. Nora, ed., Les lieux de mémoire 1. La République; 2. La Nation; 3. Les France, Paris, Gallimard, 1984–1992; cf. M. Isnenghi, ed., I luoghi della memoria, Rome–Bari, Laterza, 3 vols., 1996–1997), this seminar for PhD students aims to explore various aspects of places of worship as physical spaces in which individual and collective, familial and civic memories are processed and layered, covering a wide range of themes: foundation, colonisation, imperialism; war, peace and diplomacy; myths, rituals, epiphanies, festivals; construction, destruction, restoration, remodelling, evergetism; natural events, landscapes, relationships with space; the archiving, management and visualisation of memory, falsification, not to mention libraries and ‘museums’ within sanctuaries. The seminar will examine specific themes and the conceptual/methodological framework in depth through a selection of recent publications.

Obiettivi formativi

The course aims to promote an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to ancient religions. It is designed to focus PhD students on methodological and conceptual tools through sessions dedicated to the analysis of key recent works. The seminar will also aim to develop students’ critical ability to navigate between different themes and theoretical approaches.
