The group, active since 2022, studies and designs AI systems with particular attention to their societal impact. Its research combines complex systems analysis, explainable and trustworthy AI, and human–AI co-design to investigate how AI technologies operate, evolve, and have an impact in real-world contexts.
The group works on the development of methodologies for explainability, algorithmic trustworthiness, and AI systems that integrate human decision-making. It collaborates with partners across commerce, healthcare, smart cities, and public policy.
DHAI is the Scuola Normale Superiore branch of the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Laboratory- KDD Lab, a joint research initiative involving the Normale, the University of Pisa’s Department of Computer Science, and the Italian National Research Council (CNR).
