Sociology of the economy and the environment
Programma
Drawing on economic and environmental sociology, the course analyses the meaning of the ecological crisis and the main stages of its emergence. Different understandings of sustainability will be discussed as related to varied outlooks on risk and on the role of technology as both a cause and an answer to environmental issues. The different social and territorial impacts of climate change will be considered as well, together with a discussion of main environmental policy approaches and of employment/social policy challenges.
The course will consist of a series of meetings, each devoted to a specific topic and accompanied by assigned readings.
Obiettivi formativi
The goal of the course is to provide an updated overview of key themes in sociology of the economy and of the environment. The connecting thread is represented by the issue of sustainability. As a result of the course, students will be expected to critically examine and address the challenges raised by the alleged 'trilemma' of social, economic and environmental sustainability.
