Luigi Pellizzoni

Luigi Pellizzoni is full professor of Sociology of the environment and territory at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence. He has recently served as vice-president of the European Sociological Association (2021-2024) and editor of the journal Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia (2021-2023). He is currently member of the editorial boards of Sociologica (of which he was formerly editor), Environmental Sociology,  Scienze del Territorio, and Partecipazione e Conflitto, and of the editorial advisory panels of Science as Culture and Tecnoscienza. He is co-founder (with Giorgio Osti) of the Italian National Conference on Environmental Sociology (1996) and has been member of the organizing committee of all subsequent editions (XIV: 2023). He is founder (2017) and coordinator of POE – Politics Ontologies Ecologies, an interdisciplinary research community (sociology, political theory, anthropology, geography, philosophy, economics, STS, feminist studies). He is active at international level as keynote speaker and session organizer at general and thematic conferences and workshops of ISA (International Sociological Association), ESA (European Sociological Association), EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology) 4S (Society for the Social Study of Science), ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research), STS-Italia (Italian association for science and technology studies), AIS (Italian Sociological Association), SISEC (Italian Society for Economic Sociology), SASE (Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics), Research & Degrowth, Historical Materialism. 

He works at the intersection of environmental sociology, political ecology and Science and Technology Studies (STS), combining social theory with empirical research on risk, uncertainty, environmental change and sustainability; the social and ecological impacts of technoscience; expertise, participation, new mobilizations and the transformation of environmental governance. He has a long experience, also as PI, in national and international projects (PRIN, EC Framework Programs, Interreg etc.) and collaborations (WHO, EC-Joint Research Centre etc.). He authored about 190 scientific works, publishing in journals such as Environmental Politics, Environmental Values, British Journal of Sociology, European Journal of Social Theory, Social Movement Studies, Journal of Classical Sociology. Recent books include Ontological Politics in a Disposable World: The New Mastery of Nature (Ashgate 2015; Routledge 2016, paperback edition 2019), Handbook of Critical Environmental Politics (co-editorship, Edward Elgar, 2022), Introduzione all’Ecologia Politica (editorship, Il Mulino, 2023), Nature, Neoliberalism and New Materialisms: Riding the Ungovernable (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2025).
