Luigi Pellizzoni is full professor of Sociology of the environment and territory at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence, Italy, and co-ordinator of the research group “Politics-Ontologies-Ecologies”. He is currently vice-president of the European Sociological Association and editor of the journal Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia. He is member of the editorial boards of Sociologica (of which he was formerly editor), Environmental Sociology and Scienze del Territorio, and of the editorial advisory panels of Science as Culture and Tecnoscienza. He is active at international level as keynote speaker and session organizer at general and thematic conferences and workshops of ISA (International Sociological Association), ESA (European Sociological Association), EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology) 4S (Society for the Social Study of Science), ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research), STS-Italia (Italian association for science and technology studies), AIS (Italian Sociological Association), SISEC (Italian Society for Economic Sociology), SASE (Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics), Research & Degrowth, Historical Materialism. In 1996, together with G. Osti, he launched the National Conference on Environmental Sociology, and has been member of the organizing committee of all editions (XIV edition 2023).

His theoretical and empirical interests intersect three fields: risk, uncertainty, environmental change and sustainability; social and ecological impacts of techno-science; contentious politics, new mobilizations and the transformation of governance. He has a long experience, also as PI, in national and international projects (PRIN, EC Framework Programs, Interreg etc.) and collaborations (WHO, EC-Joint Research Centre etc.). He authored over 140 scientific works, publishing in journals such as Environmental Politics, Environmental Values, British Journal of Sociology, European Journal of Social Theory, Social Movement Studies, Journal of Classical Sociology. Recent books include Ontological Politics in a Disposable World: The New Mastery of Nature (Routledge, 2016, paperback edition 2019), Handbook of Critical Environmental Politics (co-editor, Edward Elgar, 2022), Cavalcare l’ingovernabile. Natura, neoliberalismo e nuovi materialismi (Orthotes, 2023) and Introduzione all’Ecologia Politica (editor, Il Mulino, 2023).
