The yin-yang of chondroitin sulfation: regulation of neural extracellular matrix on neuroplasticity and functional recovery after injury

Abstract
Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is enriched in the central nervous system (CNS), which exhibits the second highest levels of this glycosaminoglycan in the body. CSs are localised both within the interstitial matrix and in aggregated pericellular structures known as perineuronal nets (PNNs). We have previously shown that the enzymatic removal of CSs from the PNNs activates neuroplasticity in the adult nervous system, leading to enhanced neural functions, including improved memory acquisition in ageing and Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, the removal of CSs facilitates functional recovery after spinal cord injury.
In this seminar, I shall present evidence on how various sulfation patterns of CSs regulate neuroplasticity in pathological conditions. I shall discuss the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic treatments
