Diasporas and Religious Minorities in Early Modern Europe and the Mediterranean:
2. Movement across Geographic, Political, and Religious Boundaries
Prerequisiti
The module is designed for PhD students but undergraduates are invited to atted.
Programma
The second module, open to both undergraduates and PhD students, will seek to understand how people could (or were forced to) move across geographic, political, and religious boundaries in the early modern period: which routes could they use across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic? What facilitated and what constrained their movement? Special attention will be given to the Sephardic diaspora, the Ibero-Muslim diaspora, the Carrera de Indias, and the Atlantic slave trade.
Part of the module will be devoted to acquiring the paleographic skills necessary to read archival sources and to mapping the extensive digital resources now available to study these subjects.
In addition to the class meetings, the faculty in charge of this course, will devote a number of hours to train students in special topics. Invited scholars will also hold seminars relating to the topic of the class.
Obiettivi formativi
