Joint WORKSHOP in Sustainability in the Age of Polycrisis

Prospects, Contradictions, and Futures

As part of the EELISA – European University activities, Scuola Normale Superiore, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Paris Sciences et Lettres are organising a workshop on sustainability in the age of polycrisis, aimed at strengthening the research and training capacities of young scholars and fostering new collaborations among EELISA institutions for joint research and teaching initiatives.

The workshop will include contributions from scholars of the three organising institutions, but will primarily centre on presentations by graduate and postgraduate students working on related topics. It is conceived as a learning opportunity for students to present and receive feedback on ongoing research (including Master’s and PhD theses), with a view to submitting papers to a special issue of an international journal. The programme will conclude with a public outreach event involving civil society actors (trade unions, NGOs, think tanks), connecting academic reflection with broader societal debate.

The activity will examine how different dimensions of the polycrisis shape prospects for socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable governance. These issues will be discussed within the evolving EU governance landscape, taking into account developments since the Eurozone crisis, the so-called “refugee crisis” and the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as more recent transformations, including heightened geopolitical competition between the EU, the US and China. Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds (including law, sociology, and economics), the workshop will focus on the social and environmental dimensions of sustainability, with particular reference to three UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 8, SDG 10, and SDG 13.
