“Local protests and counterprotests in Germany 2000-2020”

ABSTRACT
Local politics deserve more attention as they considerably shape people’s political opinions and participation, especially in decentralized political systems. In an ongoing 4-year project we are currently examining local protests in four German cities between 2000-2020 based on local protest event analysis. The presentation will bring together some first insights from the study. In a first step, we will compare our local protest data to national level data, especially with respect to event frequency and topic distribution. In a second step, we will explore protest and counterprotest interactions across the four cities and look into the protest issues triggering counterprotests.
