What we see looks back at us: gaze relations in Pompeian wall painting

The gaze represents a primordial situation of social interaction. Looking and being looked at also establishes the responsive relationship between the viewer and the image.
The viewer’s gaze activates the image, which in turn receives the power to look back. What we see looks back at us.
The visual relationships that unfold in an image can thus always be read as a meta-discourse on the relationship of the gaze. And they are capable of activating the gaze of the viewer and the gaze of the image in different ways.
The lecture will focus on such visual relationships using the example of the mythological murals of Pompeii.

Religious Atmospheres in Pompeii. The contribution of Graffiti and Dipinti

The term atmosphere is fundamentally aimed at understanding the urban experience in its entirety.
This experience is shaped by the material-physical space, the ambient, sensually perceptible setting, and the actors present. But at the same time, atmospheres only appear in the subject and are sensually and physically felt, without necessarily coinciding with the emotional disposition of an individual.
The lecture addresses the question of how in the case of sanctuaries graffiti contribute to the intensification, diversification, and even obliteration of sacred atmospheres.
