Sociology of the economy and the environment
Programma
Drawing on sociology of economy and sociology of environment, the meaning of the ecological crisis and the main steps of its rise will be addressed. Different understandings of sustainability will be discussed as related to varied outlooks on risk and on the role of technology as both a cause and a reply to environmental problems. The different social and territorial impacts of environmental change will be considered as well, together with a discussion of main environmental policy approaches and of employment/social policy challenges.
The course will be organized in meetings, each one dedicated to a specific topic, also building on assigned readings.
Obiettivi formativi
The goal of the course is to provide an updated overview of key themes in sociology of the economy and of the environment. The connecting thread is represented by the issue of sustainability. As a result of the course, students will be expected to critically examine and address the challenges raised by the alleged 'trilemma' of social, economic and environmental sustainability.
