Democracy in a Time of Misery

This talk investigates how democratic politics can unfold in creative and unexpected ways, even at the most trying of times. Inspired by five years of fieldwork in communities affected by disasters, armed conflict, and urban crime in the Philippines, this talk invites audiences to reflect on challenging ethical issues when examining political contexts defined by widespread misery, and the democratic ethos demanded of global publics in responding to others' suffering.
