Jean Monnet, a founding father of the EU, said that Europe will be forged in crisis. There have been no shortages of crises recently to put Monnet’s predictions to empirical test. From the sovereign debt crises, to Brexit, Russia’s war against Ukraine and the energy shock, Europe has been confronted with enormous social, political and economic challenges.
