Rome fell because Romans stopped making Romans.’ The work of classicists is increasingly at the centre of public discourse. Our field of study is fertile ground for today’s ideological battles and, in particular, for right-wing biopolitical thinking. The ancient Greek and Roman world is invented by the Right as a time when men were men, women knew their place, and Europe was homogeneously white. Are we capable of constructing an effective counter-narrative?
