The Master’s Tools… Feminist Perspectives on AI: Critical Reflections and Case Studies

FIREworks Seminar Series

The seminar explores the compatibility between current AI tools and their concrete integration into socio-technical systems from a feminist perspective that goes beyond the dimension of data bias, which dominates much of the current debate. Drawing on feminist epistemologies and feminist theories of the human (and posthuman) subject as positioned and embodied, the study critically examines the models of subjectivity embedded in AI processes. In particular, it analyses the potentially harmful consequences of AI systems in fields such as migration governance and border control, domotics and technology-facilitated abuse, and reproductive surveillance. The research also discusses feminist and cyberfeminist practices of re-appropriation and hacking of AI tools as possible strategies of resistance and transformation
