MOVIMENTI DEL MONDO - AFRICAN YOUTH ON THE MOVE

Movimenti del Mondo is a series of events promoted by the Scuola Normale Superiore and organized by Lorenzo Mosca (SNS) and Donatella della Porta (SNS).

The Institute of Human and Social Sciences of the Scuola Normale Superiore, located in Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, invites scholars and observers of these social phenomena to critically discuss such processes offering a comprehensive view, trying to identify the global trends behind and beyond the local events.

On June 6th, the Berlinale price-winning documentary film ‘The Revolution won’t be televised’ (2016) is a close-up of the massive youth uprisings that took place in Senegal in 2011 when a new grassroots movement emerged. Led by two rappers and a journalist, thousands took to the streets to state that they were “fed up” (Y’en a marre) with the ruling president Abdoulaye Wade.

Eventually, the incumbent got voted out of office. The Senegalese filmmaker Rama Thiaw followed the protest events and movement leaders with an intimacy that resulted into a portrait of interactions between music and politics, street and state.
