Brigada Callejera de Apoyo a la Mujer E.M.A.C.
The Mexican civil association Brigada Callejera de Apoyo a la Mujer Elisa Martinez is an organization that, for 37 years, has advocated for the rights of sex workers in Mexico City and Tapachula, on the border with Guatemala. In a political context increasingly characterized by repressive violence, the Brigade’s daily social reproduction work encompasses medical support, class-based political consciousness-raising, provision of food, and arrangements for burials of sex workers. The discussion addresses key issues highlighted by the Brigada’s work, including critiques of the victimization and infantilization of sex workers, the instrumentalization of feminist issues by political actors, and the growing violence against sex workers at the border, with particular attention to the Latin American and Mexican contexts.
