Climate Changes: the Poles Matter
Abstract
This seminar delves into the pivotal role of Earth’s polar regions within the landscape of climate sciences. It examines the poles as hot spots of anthropogenic change, where human-induced alterations to the environment are starkly evident. Not only crucial for understanding global climate patterns, the poles represent a niche of biodiversity, harboring unique ecosystems vulnerable to rapid transformations. As these regions teeter close to climate tipping points, the urgency to comprehend and mitigate their impact intensifies. The discussion also explores new scientific challenges, often referred to as the ‘grail’—such as the deep ice core drilling program BeyondEPICA.
Furthermore, the talk highlights the significance of science diplomacy in fostering collaboration among nations, emphasizing the need for international cooperation to address these critical climate challenges.
