Bringing the local to the global: exploring the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in biodiversity decision-making and its outcomes

Abstract
This talk will explore the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in the processes of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (the sister treaty to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). On the basis of research with local communities, it will show where discursive spaces have, in a limited way, been opened to local voices before exploring the meanings attributed to participation by indigenous peoples and local communities in the CBD's decisions. The outcomes of participation and how influence from indigenous peoples and local communities has changed over time will then be discussed, in particular with reference to the latest meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties to be held in December 2022, where key decisions on the Global Biodiversity Framework - the plan of action to save and conserve biodiversity for the next 20 years, already delayed since 2020 are to be taken.
