Taking it on trust? Euripides and the epistemological tradition
This paper begins from ancient observations about how two Euripidean scenes were acted to a consideration of how several plays of Euripides were used in later rhetorical discussions of‘envisionment’ and philosophical (notably Stoic) discussions of the relation between perception and knowledge. The paper discusses both particular features of Euripidean tragedyand how Euripides was received in both the performative and critical traditions; these considerations may also be relevant to the development of the Euripidean canon in antiquity.

Clement of Alexandria and classical literature
All of Clement’s work, but most notably the miscellanistic Stromateis, is packed with citations from and allusions to classical Greek literature. This paper considers a sample of these citations and allusions to illustrate Clement’s method in using pagan texts, while rejecting the culture from which they grew. Primary attention will be focused both on the Stromateis and on the Protrepticus, an exhortation to non-Christians to see the truth, in which Attic tragedy functions repeatedly as the embodiment of the manner of life to be abandoned.
